The Meaning Behind Flowers: Preserving Memories

Writer: Eli CicosEli Cicos

My journey with flower preservation began during a trip to Europe with my mom. I wanted a way to hold on to that special time together, to keep it alive in more than just photographs. Growing up in Eastern Europe, pressing flowers was something we naturally learned as kids.

Since I left home, the time I spend with my mom has become incredibly precious. The memories we create together feel even more valuable now, and preserving them has become a way of treasuring those moments. I believe it’s important for everyone to feel like their life has purpose. For me, that purpose lies in helping others preserve their cherished memories. Sentimental bouquets, like those from weddings, anniversaries, or even memorials, hold such deep emotional significance.

Flower preservation has truly transformed my life. Not only is it a creative outlet, but it’s also a deeply fulfilling way to connect with people’s stories. Each project carries its own unique narrative, a couple’s first dance, a loved one’s farewell, or a mother’s treasured moment with her child. Flowers, in their fleeting beauty, remind us of life’s impermanence. By preserving them, we hold onto the emotions and memories tied to these significant events.

Beyond the personal, I’ve found that flower preservation helps people find closure, joy, or even healing. When a client brings in a bouquet that belonged to a late family member or their wedding flowers, the preserved piece becomes a tangible reminder of love and connection. It’s not just about the flowers; it’s about what they represent, moments we want to revisit and stories we want to keep telling.

In my studio, I’ve had the privilege of preserving flowers for so many beautiful occasions. Whether it’s through a handmade frame, resin jewelry, or floating glass art, each design reflects the uniqueness of that memory. I approach every project with care, knowing how much it means to the person who brought it to me.

Flower preservation is a practice that has bridged my past and present. It carries with it the nostalgia of childhood, the lessons of time, and the joy of creating something lasting. It’s a way to say, “This mattered. This moment deserves to be remembered.” And for me, being able to provide that service makes my work more than just a job.
